Death by Distractions

Last week I talked a little bit about fear and it being the main obstacle holding you back from living life how you want. This week I’m going to talk about something that kills the dreams of even the most fearless people.

As you gathered from the title… I’m talking about the death of a dream. For me when I see someone who has allowed their dream to die, I see a couple of things. These are also signs for you to personally watch out for:

• Never satisfied
• Always strapped for cash
• Empty feeling
• Like to complain
• Envy people with money
• Feelings of hatred toward happy people
ALWAYS cynical
• Searching for the next “whatever” to keep them going
• Talks bad about other people more than good
• Finds themselves in a lot of situations where the convo gets boring quickly
• Has a hard time making people smile and feel good about why they are smiling

So after this rant about what dream death looks like, I’ll get back to the topic at hand.

Your dream can die multiple ways and one of them is by letting distractions rule your time.

Distractions can be anything that prevents you from doing what needs to be done to achieve your dream. The first thought that comes to your mind is probably TV. Well that definitely is the largest, but there are more distractions that you may not have thought about. Here are some:

• Lazy/unmotivated friends
• Needy girlfriend/boyfriend
• The News wherever you get it (political, entertainment, gossip, co-worker, etc.)
• Lame environments (sitting in your cube)
• Being unorganized
• Negative people
• Having your cell phone on you all the time (you cannot fight checking it if you have it nearby)
• Messy environments
• Daydreams
• Negative thoughts

I could go on and on but I think you get it. There are tons of distractions and more than I care to name.

Here is what you do:

1. Ask yourself “Is this the best use of my time?” (learned this from Juwon and if you are honest you can easily sort out distractions.)

2. Get organized however it works for you.

3. Make a list of all your distractions and get rid of them or set aside a set time for yourself to be distracted. Sounds weird, yes? This is really hard to do but it is the only way you can save your dream from dying by distractions. The only way this works is if you know what you want out of life and steel your mind to focus on going after it.

4. Lastly, limit your time with people who have let their dreams die. Nothing good can come from hanging out with these people. Maybe a few laughs while you bitch about whatever the latest issue is, but then you are left feeling empty and bored. MOVE ON. You don’t need them but they do need you or they will have no one’s life to ruin but their own.

So there you have it.

Try those four things out and for more than a couple of days.

3 Quick Ways to Control Fear

March 2, 2010 · Leave a Comment

What is usually the main reason that you do not pursue something that you really desire?

After reading the title you should already know.

It’s fear.

Fear is the barrier between desire and action. Fear is the reason why you choose to be average instead of daring to be what you were meant to be. Fear is the reason you may choose an easy job or certain majors, because you fear the unknown and embrace “safety.”

Fear is the gap between entrapment and freedom. Fear is the hurdle between happiness and misery.

Have you been letting fear hold you back?

Well I have to tell you a little something about fear.

It never goes away. Learn to use it to your advantage.

Fear is a sense that has been ingrained in our DNA through thousands of years of trial and error. It is a sense that helps some people survive and others thrive. The ones who thrive are those who do what others are afraid of. They aren’t any more talented, they just find a way to use fear to their advantage.

People are either going to let their fear control them or use it as a stimulant to push them further.

Which type of person will you be?

I am not the expert on fear and never will I claim to be. But what I do know is that I moved from an extremely shy person to one who is willing to do what it takes to use fear as a tool to live life on my terms.

Here are three basic questions I use that help me to control my fear and push me beyond the comfort zone.

1. Do I Want to Regret Not Doing This?

In my previous post on the question “What If,” I talked about avoiding this moment at all costs. Regrets are a heavy burden to deal with. They weigh you down, make you unfocused, create low self-esteem, and also increase fear. If you do something and put your all into it then what do you have to be regretful about? Nothing! But if you have an opportunity and don’t seize it or do all you can, then you will have regrets. When facing fear in any situation, ask yourself if you want to live with the regret that will come from letting fear win. It’s a heavy price to pay and it comes with interest.

The most important six letter word for achieving anything

Lights camera, hope?

Lights, camera, dream?

Lights, camera, plan?

None of the phrases above sound right. While dreams and plans and hopes are important, you can do them from sun down until sun up and you will achieve nothing.  The most important six-letter word for achieving anything is ACTION!

The difference between dreams and accomplishments is ACTION!

Don’t tell people what you want to accomplish one day. Show them what you’re doing today.

Don’t spend all day dreaming. Wake up, get up, and make your dreams realities.

Don’t waste precious days planning for the perfect moment. Dive in and change directions once you’re actually in the game.

Think about this for a moment:

As an able bodied being, doesn’t it make sense that you were only given one mouth, but two hands and two feet for a reason!?!

Today, tomorrow, for the rest of your life, develop the habit of taking action, and watch you dreams turn into accomplishments!

Have a great week!
